How to Create a Power BI Dashboard

By CharterPeak Editorial Team · Last updated

Direct answer: plan the questions, load and clean data, build a star-schema model, write measures, add a few well-chosen visuals with slicers, then publish to the Power BI Service.

1. Plan

Who uses it and what decision does it support? Write three questions.

2. Load and clean

Use Power Query to set types, remove columns and merge tables.

3. Model

One fact table, dimensions around it, a date table. See data modeling.

4. Measures

Revenue, Margin %, vs Target, vs Last Year. See DAX.

5. Visuals

KPI cards on top, trend line, breakdown bar chart, and a table for detail. Limit colours; use consistent formats.

6. Interactivity

Slicers for date and region, drill-through to a detail page, tooltips for context.

7. Publish

Publish to a workspace, schedule refresh and share according to your licensing.

Common mistakes

  • Twelve visuals and no focus
  • Rainbow colours with no meaning
  • No target or comparison on KPIs

Conclusion

Dashboards succeed when they answer questions fast. Practise in the Power BI dashboard course.
