How Power BI job listings read

Look for repeating phrases: “DAX”, “data modeling”, “Power Query”, “row-level security”, “Power BI Service”, “SQL”. Make a checklist and compare it to your skills. Each phrase maps to learning here: DAX, modeling, Power Query, dashboards.

Skills ladder

  1. Build visuals and basic reports
  2. Clean data in Power Query
  3. Design correct star-schema models
  4. Write DAX including time intelligence
  5. Publish, refresh and secure reports
  6. Optimise performance and document models

Proof of skill

Publish two or three dashboards with a clear problem and write-up. Consider Microsoft’s PL-300 exam if your target employers value it; it is separate from our course certificate.

Start with the Power BI course and see interview questions. Pay varies by city, experience and employer; consult current listings and salary surveys.
