How to Become a Data Analyst

A realistic plan from zero to a job-ready portfolio.

Short answer: learn Excel and one BI tool well, practise on realistic datasets, build two or three documented projects, and prepare to explain your work. Most people take several months of steady practice; the time depends on your starting point.

Step 1 – Get fluent in Excel

Formulas, lookups, pivot tables and clean tables. Start with the Excel course or equivalent self-study.

Step 2 – Learn to clean data

Real data is messy. Learn Power Query so cleaning is repeatable.

Step 3 – Learn a BI tool

Power BI is widely used with Microsoft environments. Cover modeling, DAX and dashboards: Power BI course.

Step 4 – Build projects

Pick public datasets you are allowed to use, define a business question and produce a dashboard plus a one-page insight note.

Step 5 – Learn what your target jobs ask for

Read 20 listings. If SQL or Python recur, add them. See skills.

Step 6 – Prepare for interviews

Practise common questions and a timed case task.

Common mistakes

  • Collecting certificates instead of finishing projects
  • Building dashboards with no stated question
  • Ignoring data-quality checks
