Short answer: Google Sheets is strong for real-time collaboration and lightweight sharing; Excel is stronger for heavy analysis, large files, Power Query, Power Pivot and desktop automation. Most corporate analyst roles expect Excel.
| Excel | Google Sheets | |
|---|---|---|
| Collaboration | Co-authoring in Microsoft 365 | Native, browser-first |
| Analytics add-ons | Power Query, Power Pivot, advanced pivots | Pivot tables, QUERY function |
| Large data | Handles more with the data model | Slows on large sheets |
| Automation | Macros/VBA, Office Scripts | Apps Script |
Formula logic transfers between them. Learn Excel properly in the Excel course, then extend into advanced topics. See also Excel vs Power BI.
